Hello from the South Shore

I started collecting a tank and equipment about 10 or so years ago. My kids were very young at the time and I didn't realize how much time and cost goes into a reef tank, so I decided to revisit it later on... and here I am! I guess I'll just throw out what I already own and what I'm planning to get. Feedback would be very appreciated.

What I already own: 75 gal tank w/ overflow, 6 stage RO/DI filter, for lighting i have 2 VHO actinic and (2) 250w/10000K MH's, Euro Reef CS6-1, 950gph Mag drive pump, 2 Maxi-Jet 1200 powerheads, Won Brothers heater and a SCWD.

What I plan on building/getting: I plan on building a DIY 20 gal sump w/ refugium, need a Sedra 3500 for skimmer(old one damaged somehow).

I'm not even remotely worrying about fish and coral at this point. I just want to get the system ready for live rock and maybe a cleanup crew after the tank has cycled. I'll ask questions about fish and coral later. Again, any feedback, negative or positive will be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to interacting with members! Thanks!

Tom

Thanks, Hatonhed.

I just want to make sure that everything is compatible. I know I'll want to upgrade the powerheads at some point.

Also, I'm not sure if I have enough lighting to keep pretty much anything I want, or not.

Yeah I would say you can get it up and running wth that equipment. With two VHO (may want to change to T5's) and two 250w MH's over a 75 you have more than enough light.....almost too much!

How old are the lights? That may be a concern if they are out of spectrum......might bring on bad algae. I would vinegar bath all the equipment too just to give it a good clean. Double chek the filter in the RODI too.

Good luck!!!

Thanks for the input, PSU4ME.

The lights were original equipment that I bought 10 years ago. They had very little use originally and should be ok, unless the quality of the bulbs change in storage too. I will check the RODI, but the filter is so old now that I'm not sure where to pick up replacement filters.

Bulk reef supply has some good filter replacement options. Your lights might be ok in the beginning but given their importance to coral, I wouldn't chance it once you get to that point

Thanks, Flame Angel. I definitely plan on attending a meeting once I get the tank up and running.
