Hi BRS,

I have been dabbling I guess you'd say with reefing for a few years. Never fully commiting the time, $$ and the $$ that it needs. But I'm ready now! I have educated myself alot over the past few months and I have renewed vigour for reefing. As they say knowledge is power. Which is one of the reasons why I'm here. At the moment I have a sad 20g with live rock, RBTA, clown, damsel, pseudochromis and of course cyano and bubble algae. My cheap RedSea HOB skimmer broke and I have a HOB penguin filter. Yeah I know,.... I know. Lighted by a 130w PCFL 10kday + dual actinic. I have been buying equipment since November and I think I will be ready to leak test in a 4-6 weeks .
Here is what I have so far:
60 gallon RR Marineland cube 24Lx24Wx25H
SC Aquariums Stand 24x24x30H
250w MH 15k + 100w T5 dual actinics
Vortech MP10es
Aqueon Sump Model 1
Reef Keeper Lite(on the UPS truck)

Over the next couple of weeks I will be ordering a phosban reactor and an AquaC EV120 skimmer which will be set up externally right next to the sump. I will be running a tiny refugium in the Aqueons middle chamber. RODI filter will also be ordered by the end of next month. Plan is a mixed reef tank with a DSB, live rock, skimmer and sump\refugium. Still have not decided where the tank will ultimately be placed. I think I covered it all for now. I look forward to seeing some cool looking tanks and learning alot. I tried to attach pics but its hard making my JPEGS small enough, ill try again another time.

Welcome to the BRS!

Sounds like you are off to a good start. The best thing you can do for yourself and reef is read, and ask questions.

Good Luck Derek

I was able to shrink my pics down some more.

Can anyone tell me the best type of paint for glass? I want to paint the 2 strips of glass next to the overflow black. Or dark blue? Acrylic or oil?

First off Welcome!!

The color depends on what you like. I have done both and both look good. I used a wall paint with a low Satin gloss. I have heard other people using Acrylic paint also.

I have always gone to HD and picked out a nice color wall paint. Just get a $3 sample, and your good. A light scouring with triple fine steel wool, helps the paint adhere. But you can do lots of thin layers, and just be careful not to scratch it off. Nice tank, I love the cubes.

Welcome!

Looks like a nice clean slate you re starting with!

For paint, in the past I have used acylic paint with one of those foam brushes. Pain in the arse because you have to do many many layers. On my current build, I am using plasti dip. Goes on super easy, and it comes off even easier! I also thought about using VHT night shades (which is a dark glass tint spray) but ended up using plasti dip and it looks great. Plasti dip is available in spray and paint form, I used the spray.
