I always keep a 5 gallon bucket with a small powerhead going 24/7. I'll throw in a heater a couple hours before a water change. Whatever water I use I replace & add a proportional amount of salt. I just like to have it in case of emergencies. If you can I'd recommend that. As far as mixing any batch, I'm usually more concerned with the temperature because that takes longer (2-3 hours). For salt Instant Ocean is almost ... instant lol

I always mix up new water whenever I used the water I previously mixed. I keep it in a bucket with a heater and a powerhead so it is ready when I need it.

I normally mix new saltwater right after my weekly water change, so it usually sits for at least a few days before adding it to the display.

I have mine mixed in a Brute barrel and usually leave the mixing pump on until the next day. I do keep it aerated and heated though in case I have an emergency.

A barrell will usually last me a month.

I mix & dump.... (well, I wait until it is disolved...which usually takes no more than 45 mins) (you can do that with TM) Instant ocean doesn't mix as well...usually takes upwards of 5 hours to dilute that salt mix completely...

As for the power head in the bucket with a heater.....It is not a good method... I find that the fresh mixed water in the bucket attracts dust & foreign matter while sitting waiting to be used. This contamination takes place even if it is covered)

I notice a slime buildup around the edges after less than a week...After sitting more than a day imo I would say your probably taking out cleaner water than your replacing from the premixed vessel..

I tried it & I noticed a decline in overall tank water quality over the course of probably 8 months with scheduled monthly water changes...... I won't practice that method any longer...... (that was something I discovered over 8 years ago I may add)

But I'm sure someone will chime in & dispute my claim...You might even see some formula as to why my claim is disputed!!:D

+1, thanks for saving me the time to type it out

1) Is TM = Tropic Marin?
2) Do you use (fresh) water that's similar temperature? (what are your methods?)

Sorry MPevine I don't want to hijack I just wanted clarification, just curious as it seems I may want to change my methodology :)

I try to let mine mix for a few hours so that the PH brings up the temp of the water and sometimes throw in a heater to help. I wouldn't let saltwater sit longer than a day because as Brian mentioned about the film I've had that happen to me as well. In the ideal world I would let it sit overnight so the water can get some air and have the pH come back up because I believe I've read (might be just with my salt mix I'm not sure) that when you add salt to water it lowers the pH and takes a while for it to come back up... Don't quote me on that last part I just swear I've read it somewhere

I'm sure your tank attracts that same dust and foreign matter as well, just on a much larger scale.

not a problem. its related :)

I also Use TM salt, i dont use a heater, its typically about 76 when its ready to go in, and my tank is just about always at 77.5 (Fluval E200.....LOVE IT)

yeah but my tank has a skimmer attached to it & a sock of carbon floating in the sump!!;)
