How you should control pump flow without a controller

So I have seen a few people talking about putting a valve on the return side of the pump. By doing that it makes the pump work harder because it is pumping against a higher pressure backing up from the valve. By doing it this way your not restricting the flow of the pump. It will make the pump run more efficiently and should make it last longer in theory.

Purple primer was all I could find that day lol. So if you open that valve it will dump water back into the sump and send less to the tank.

Ok well I wasn't saying I invented it guy. I was trying to describe it to someone and I just took a pic so I figured I would post it. Thanks for the wise remark. Thought this website was for helping each other out. I'm sure there's people that don't know this.

some return pumps are designed to have their output restricted and do in fact run more efficiently when they are restricted.

Very cool! Thanks for the photo and explanation. I don't think I have that problem right now I have a pretty weak return right now :)
