i have a coralife 150 hqi with a 10k in it that's @ 6 months old what are your suggestions on 14k's or anyn of the other bulbs> brands also thanks, paul

Check to be sure, IIRC some corallife bulbs are special and the options are very limited. *I may be wrong, just something to keep in mind.

You asked about 14K as a replacement so I assume you want more blue, NO?

Pheonix 14K bulbs are popular and seem to have a nice balance between blue and growth. (I'm saving up to go with ushio 14K's, but they would look yellow if you want blue ;) )

I have also read that you have to be careful with Coralife fixtures. Coralife seems to do some crazy things with their set-ups.

I believe that Coralife provides the UV sheilding on their bulbs, not on the glass (as is common on other fixtures). So, switching away from Coralife to other bulb manufacturers could burn your corals. I would give Coralife a call to confirm on your specific fixture.

As for the bulbs, I have used a few 150's

Aquaconnect 12k (liked it a lot but can not find. If you can find them, they
are really expensive)

Phoenix (too much blue for my liking, but still looked nice. Bulbs seems to
have a short life)

Ushio 14k (looked yellowish green. Got poor coral growth. Actually had a
torch coral recede)

Coralife 14K (really nice color. Torch coral is coming back. I may go with
this bulb again)

Regards,

JD

About 99% sure you need a coralife bulb for that fixture because of the UV shield on the bulb.

John is right,I replaced Phoenix 14ks with Ushio 14k's on my DE MH Maristar, and the blue is much less pronounced. Less coral fluorescence too, but the growth has been (subjectively) better on the Ushios

You need the Coralife bulbs, they are UV shielded, the others aren't.
I learned the hard way. Tried the pheonix and Ushio 14K bulbs but ended up Burning a bunch of corals....
For what it's worth the 14K coralifes didn't seem much bluer than the 10K

thanks for the advice much appreciated paul
