I did it again!

Tankless
I didnt have my float valve mounted yet so I just turned my RODI on to make up for the yesterdays evaporated water...Woke up this morning realizing I never turned it of...while standing in a puddle

The salinity in my tank has dropped to 1.019...amazingly to the same salinity as when this happened last time. Based on my horrible calculations (read guesses), I think I'm going to have to mix up about 8 gallons of SW get it in the tank and let it slowly evaporate down. When this happened on my last tank it took 12 gallons. I'm a little pissed right now...not the sunday morning I was looking forward to.

Steve,

That sucks. Almost flooded the basement yesterday because I forgot to shut of the RODI when filling the mixing bin. Hope everything survives!

Look at the advantage now of having so much coral in the tubs...

Yeah, I've forgotten about it at least 5 times in the last few years -- thank goodness for shopvacs! I bought some water alarms that really help, but that only works when you're filling something that will overflow... Sorry to hear Steve but it sounds like it could have been worse!

been there done that. in fact, when the last of the live rock I sold yesterday was taken I had a hose plumbed into that tank to keep recircualting but wire tied it. took it out and literally looked at it and made sure it was snug in the 300 poly tank it was from. me and troubleman brought the tub with the rock outside, I went back in the basement to grab some newspaper to keep the rock moist and what do you know, water all over the place. GRRR, shop vac is a reefers necessity.....bad part is I had the intuition and I ignored it.

Steve I would suggest you would bypass your make up water so if you did it again it wouldnt affect your tank at all.

After doing this myself, I installed an overflow pipe to my storage bin. If I forget to shutoff the RO, it just pours into that pipe and straight down thru my cement floor. Used a standard 3/4" cement bit and drilled thru 4" of concrete down to the 6" crushed stone sublayer. I have never had a flood since, and I forgot about the RO myself today.

This was all out of pure laziness...I didn't feel like plumbing the float valve and figured I would just top it off real quick. Well the float valve is getting plumbed this morning and I'm going to put a sprinkler valve on my RODI feed. That way if my sump gets too high it will kill the feed. Stupid mistakes are the worst...I just wanna go bang my head against a wall right now :D

Been their done that to many times I also feel your pain. Shop Vac.s are the best, I get pissed for wasting good water and then leaving damp floor behind.

Do you have it set up to kill after a certain ammount of time or topoff if there is a leak of saltwater so you don't run it too long and dilute if the tank leaks or if the float gets stuck?

I don't...but maybe I will also tie in some sort of water sensor under the tank. It would be kind of hard to do though because my cabinet is half on carpet. The only way I would be able to tell if that half leaks would be to notice the carpet is wet.

Or put the rodi on a timer so it can only go a few hours a day.

Actually, that is a very good idea! I can set it to only be on during the day when the evaporation happens more.

By the way...you guys don't even want to know how low my pH has dropped from this. Lets just say that I can't believe my tank isn't nuked...I'm actually SHOCKED that all the corals are open and look happy.
