In tank glueing

THE WOOKIE

Just Keep Swimming
so i picked up a ORA green birds nest today and it came on a awkwardly sized frag disk that wont fit in the rock work . i tried using reef putty but it wont hold, tried super glue (cyanocrylate type) and neither held it in place. need some advice before the turbos mow them down like they did to my other un glued frags. (they killed a blue polyp acro and a favia frag )

yup that cyanocrylate glue is the gel type

I use JB WaterWeld and it works amazing. I was worried to use it at first but there were tons of reviews praising it and its potable water safe. It holds entire 5 pound rocks up

Best bet is probably to try again with the putty IMO.

It won't stick like glue, but if you can find a nook in your rock work where the frag plug sits pretty nicely, you can then use the putty to make a couple of blobs that will hold/jam the plug in place. As long as that stays put long enough for the putty to harden, it will usually stick long term.

use more glue...depending on size, you might use a whole small tube of gel. Lean it up against something 'til it sets hard. Doesn't always work instantly

First thing I do is break of the steam part of the plug. Next, I put a little glue on the remaining frag plug, then put a ball of JB waterweld on top of that so the glue is sandwhiched between the frag plug and putty. Then I put a little more glue on the bottom of the ball of putty.

This way it has the glue to hold it and the putty to help the frag fit nicely.

^^^ thats what i do 90% of the time as well.. works great

^^^??^^^

going to try this jb water weld.

Ime ecotech coral glue only sticks to fingers and its expensive I've been using the super glue gel by loctite and it works great try drying the plug put a small blob of gel then soak it in water until it gets cloudy then add another blob over it then put it where you want it push the plug hard against a rock and slightly twist what this does is it pops the blobs so they stick to both the rock and plug, works everytime

I save my old syringes (from when I use to shoot up) from test kits. I fill them with glue and shoot it under the water. Sometimes the putty you need to give it a couple minute to cure before you put it in. I also try to clean the area with a tooth brush so I can get a decent bond.

I usually put super glue on the plug, disk, etc. then some putty and then some more super glue on the other side of the putty. Has worked pretty well for more in the past.

Gluing in tank is pain. I find the key is to use the smallest amount you can get away with. It is only supposed to hold it in place until it grows and attaches itself. So the more glue, the more it has to grow. The glue will skin as soon as it hits the water so you need to drag it on the LR to break the skin so it will stick. Also clean the surface on the LR in tank as it will not stick to Algae

Try it with some dead coral skeleton and dry rock in a small bucket of water until you get the hang of it.

I break or remove the coral if possible from the plug. I glue it out of the tank on a small piece of rubble rock with the Loc-Tite gel glue. Then i mount the piece of rock using either AquaMend or JB Water Weld.
