Input needed - Coralife Biocube 29 or 29 HQI?

Hey All,

I have the opportunity to get a great deal on a Coralife BioCube 29G all-in-one and am looking for input/advice on whether I should go with the standard model or the HQI model?

What are the difference between the two models and are they worth the cost difference?

I'm thinking if I went with the standard model I could always do a LED mod later.

Thanks!

Isn't the HQI the same just a Metal Halide?

I have had the reg BC, with LEDs retrofit, and also with stock compacts. Great tank, I refer them to friends and relatives.

I would think the HQI would throw off alot of heat for a small amount of water. Maybe run a chiller or keep in climate controlled room.

I will go with the regular model with LED MOD, because if you go with the HQI, you may want to swap out the bulb immediately.

IMO the Biocube HQI is not very attractive. it uses a clamp on style MH unit that sits over the cube.
I would go with the regular model and upgrade the cool all in one style hood.
Or do as I did and get the JBJ Nanocube HQI. They put the MH in the stock hood and retains that smooth all in one look.

Yeah, I've read the HQI version can get hot/overheat. So far other than that the only thing I've seen mentioned, but haven't confirmed, is that the HQI comes with the skimmer.

Right now I'm thinking of just going with the standard model and stand; then down the road doing the LED mod from Rapid Led or similar.

Any other MODs or items I need out the gate?

Yeah, not too crazy on the look of the HQI myself. My options to get this deal at the standard BC or the HQI, so I have to decide between one of those.

My sons Oceanic 29 has a LED mod (formerly PC's) and stays very cool.
The MJ1200 is what drives up the heat (another mod which is highly recommended).
