Hi:

I am wondering why people buy and sell those tall hex tank? Is there any value (use) in saltwater hobby for a 20G tall hax tank?

If I stuck with one (very likely), what should I do with it?

Thanks a lot

Sincerely

Nice tank.

Is it true that this kind of tank is OK for reef but not very good for fish only or flesh water? I heard enough bad opinions about it on flesh water boards.

Thanks a lot

well its great for small fish, and you could even do a reef tank with this if you hung a pendent lamp above it.the only bad part is its somewhat small. this was my first saltwater tank, it was a fish only with live rock.I have since upgraded

a closeup.

it was a learning experience, I did a lot of things wrong, but regardless, the hexagon had a lot of potential

With a 150 or 175 MH pendant That could be a rockin reef.
If you could build a sump to fit in the stand and drill the hex you would be able to do just about anything that a big tank or rectangle tank can do.

I saw a pic of a reef at RC using one of these and it was awesome. Do a search for hex tanks over at RC. You will come up with some good ideas for yours.

I've been thinking about how I could do a small reef, w/ low light, and with a tank that doesn't take up much space. I've got a beautiful non-photosynthetic gorgonian in a nano, and that made me start thinking about what other kinds of non-photosynthetic corals I could have. A reef like this hex would be pretty cool, because you could build a tall reef structure w/ lots of overhangs for some cave corals, and you wouldn't need much light - just enough to illuminate the tank for you, and some actinic to bring out highlights on the corals. You could put the savings on lighting towards an even better skimmer, and you'd be all set.

I had a 60g hex as my 1st reef tank. My only problem was reaching the bottom. I had a 250w MH on it & it was great as a starter tank. If I had kept it there would of been some things I did different. I think they would make a great seahorse tank, pipefish, clown tank, I saw one as an anemone tank... , fuge...

Please forgive my newbie question because I am a newbie for reef.

If I want to set a 20 Gal Hex as a live rock/sand with one clown fish only, what kind of light do I need? I am not planing to put any coral in it. May be two shrimps and some snails? Will a mushroom need a lot of light?

Thanks a lot

I need to learn a lot and here is another question:

Will two Aquaclear 3000 powerheads in a 20 gallon long generate too much current?

Thanks

Normal Outputs (NO) will take care of the clown and snail, mushrooms, etc. You won't see as much growth out of the shrooms with NO lighting but it will work.

If you think you may get a few other soft corals like zooanthids or toadstool then you may try the Power Compacts (PC) or Very High Output (VHO).
You can do a lot with PC and VHO lighting.

Not sure of your budget but if you keep an eye out you should be able to find some used lighting around at a reasonable price.
Check out the for sale forum here and at www.reefcentral.com

I agree w/Tstone.
You can do it with normal output lights. Some power compacts up there would be a better choice, though. Could be a really pretty tank - a couple small fsih, mushrooms, zoanthids, green star polyps, a few leather corals... bingo.

to give you an idea of what you can do with pcs. check out the Tank of the month on RC

Wao, thanks a lot.

Another thing to do is read, read ,read and read some more before you spend your money.
Knowledge will help you make good choices.

I saw one with a metal halide and it had a blue carpet and two clowns some live rock what a display maybe i will buy one o yah wife said something about one more tank and i will be looking at them from the out side i wonder what she ment by that????????

Is anyone looking for a hex...I have a 60 with stand I need to get rid of as soon as I get it out of my ex's apartment.

I think the tank I'm buying will be my coffin.....

I agree with the read read read idea. Don't rush and buy things that won't really be the right thing to buy. If you can fight your urge a little bit to save a few more dollars and spend it on the RIGHT things rather then what the guy at the store tells you you need, then you will be much happier, and end up saving money because you won't have to turn around and buy the right stuff later. I hoep that makes sense.
