lighting for a 125

It's time for me to purchase some more permanent lighting for my tank. I have a loaner light set up that's worked out for the first three months. My tank is a 72" x 18" x 18" and 125 gallons. Right now I have a few zoanthid colonies, some mushrooms, and an anemone but eventually I may want SPS. Would a 6' 250 watt MH be too much or what would you recommend?

It depends on what you mean by 6' 250W (what fixture). I have 2 250W halides on my 125, and will be putting in a third once I replace my center brace with a clear lexan (the existing black center brace would both create a big shadow with a light over it, and also melt from the heat of a bulb right over it).

I have a lot of SPS in my tank, along with other things (though it's primarily SPS). 250 Watts has worked perfectly for me. Many people on here with a 6ft 125 tank generally use 250 (over 400 watts). With 400, you could get some really good penetration down to the sandbed, but the temps would likely get pretty high.

I hope this helps.
