Long term success arduino float switch

My dad needs a programmable timer for his dry cleaning machine for Xmas (think washing machine timer on steroids) - that has gotten me into Arduino...

Anyhow...

I need to replace the manual float switch I have now on my ATO storage.

That has lead to the proverbial - when you have a hammer, every problem is a nail - so now, I am compelled to implement Arduino based solutions in my system. Heck I want to implement Arduino based solutions all over my house :)

I think folks have such float switches implemented now (?) - any leads on long lasting hardware?

Did you do anything really cool / absurd like graphing how often the switch operates etc.?

Gads I need another hobby like I need a hole in the head.
