Mag-Drive 9.5 question

I'm thinking of getting one but I've read reviews and there is mention of a "hum". I was wondering if anybody here has ever run one and how bad the hum was. It'll be in the room where I sleep, not submerged and in a cabinet, so how annoying do you think the hum is on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being virtually silent and 10 being un-livable.

are you using this on a closed loop or a return pump? personally, i would suggest other pumps. i am not a fan of mag pumps. i use a mag pump to do water changes. i would rate it at about a 3-4 on the noise scale.

I would not get it if you are a light sleeper.....

I would suggest a much quieter pump in a bedroom.

Sit it on a plastic bag filled with wet sand you should have no problem, unless your like me and need total silence.

I'd rate mine as both a 3 and an 8 on the noise scale. The reason is it seems to go through cycles where it's quiet for awhile and then makes a racket for awhile. I would look into another pump. Mine is being relegated to water change transfer pump duty.

If run external I would give the MAG 9.5 a rating of 6, under a decent amount of water I would rate it a 3.5-4. Unless run submersed I would look into a different pump for a return pump.

Thanks for all the answers.
I'm planning a closed loop type setup, so it looks like I'm going to be in the market for a different pump. As far as sleeping goes, I can pretty much sleep on a pile of rocks on the side of the highway during rush hour but for some reason constant low noises drive me up the wall.
Any suggestions on a medium priced pump with a volume of between 750-1250-ish gph?

If constant low noises bother you I would rethink putting it in the bedroom, in any event I would stay away from external pumps, I would consider an Eheim, lower flow but low noise, and reliable.

Mine hums. I have a 9.5 and a 7 running my tank. I wish I knew then what I know now.

I would go with the eheim 1262. It will give you more flow than the MAG 9.5 and should be a bit quieter. And it is definitely a much better pump as far as make and quality go. A bit more expensive though, but worth it.
