Microscope

Fins To The Left
Maybe I'm the consumate geek but I got a microscope for Xmas....though it just finally arrived yesterday. First thing I see in my tank?? Diatoms! Man, it's SO cool seeing what's in my water and such. Maybe I should have been a biologist.

Cool! I suppose it's a regluar compound microscope, huh?
What power lenses came with it?

For the future, a very cool (although expensive) doo-dad is a digital camera accessory that would enable you to get a picture of the slide at whatever magnification and then post it for your (nerdy) friends (like me)!

Ok, you got me...I have that digital camera in my shopping cart as we speak :-). I am a total propeller head. Ahahahah. It is a regular compound, cost $89 and has a powered light source. 10x objective lens and I think it has 10x, 20x and 40x lenses. I didn't want to go all out but now I wish I had a little more power than max 400x. It's kinda cool though to walk in and see a microscope and slide kit sitting on the table :-).

I look at my koi pond water, subtrates, and silt through my kids' hobby microscope. It is amazing. My favorite are the fresh water rotifers. They are kinda comical to watch.

That's plenty of power for what we would want to see in the hobby.
Anything higher power and you'd have to get into oil immersion, or other prepatory steps to see anything. That's too much work, IMO.

I look forward to your posts w/ 'scope pics!

I have the toy microscope thing that comes w/ the cheap digital camera and USB connex to the computer. It's okay, but very difficult to get a good picture. The camera's resolution is pretty bad. But whaddaya want for $100? ;)

I'll get right on it. The digital cam thing is $100. I have to make sure that I can swap out the objective lens on my particular scope first.

VERY cool. I am looking forward to some pictures! Wsonner, did you order the microscope online? If so, may I ask where?

Yes, I got it from www.hometrainingtools.com. It is item MI-1SCOPE. I'm very happy with it for only $89. I also got the slide making kit with two types of dye and pipet and slides w/covers.

If you find any hair algae or cyno, put a tiny chunk of it on a slide. There are all kinds of disgusting cool worms and such that live in them that are too small to see with the eye. Made me want to not touch that stuff any more... ;)
