modding a protein skimmer question

trajik ink

will i am
i have a e.t.s.s. 1000 protein skimmer that i'm trying to sell but it looks like i'll be stuck with it......anyways i was wondering if i could mod it by cutting the downdraft shaft so it's the same height as the top of the skimmer itself and still have the same skimming power? if anyone can help with some tips be free to respond and share your knowledge....thx in advance.

I'm pretty sure you would loose something with the downdraft effect if you cut the towers down, but maybe it would be workable.
They make some downdrafts with shorter tubes, so maybe it would just be a loss in effiency but not too bad?

I think you could also mod that into a beckett, then cutting the tube down wouldn't be a problem.

that's basically what i was thinking. it would probably make it skim like the 600. i'm kind of hesitating on it.....don't know if i will screw it up if i do.

Try e-mailing ETSS and asking for advice. The worst they can do is not be helpful :)

Yeah im actually very interested in that skimmer. but the spot ive got for it will in no way allow for its height of 58". I was going to try and contact ETSS or ask Gary from ChampionLighting. Hes been a tremendous help so far...hopefully he wont let us down...

The 1000 would be perfect for my application if it was 46-48" max. Im going to ask what the result would be if i were to cut it down...

If a becket is the only option ill get a hold of Tim from MRC and see how hed recommend plumbing it up..or if it would work out at all.

PS. MRC is coming out with a new needlewheel skimmer this thursday...they will be on sale as of next monday. Apparently they knock the socks off of their recirculation skimmers...interesting huh? i cant wait to check em out...
