mushroom eating yellow tang??

has anyone heard of yellow tangs eating mushroom coral? about a week ago my yellow tang died out of nowhere. ive had him for a while and all the other fish are fine. a couple days after the mystery i noticed that my big purple mushroom was eaten straight to the base. Are those deadly if eaten? i know he has eaten star polyps.

I've seen a few friends tangs who have a taste for thier mushrooms and none of them have died from it. Best to look for another cause of death... JMO
