The heater of the fish room is set to 65F. Because of all the metal halides, the room reached 82F today. I think I need to use more t-5 instead of metal halide. It is the warmest room in the house.

Now my wife and kids are like to hanging around in the fish room because it is the warmest room in the house. also there is a TV in it.

Hey dong, MH's are actually a tiny bit more efficient than T5s as far as lumens per watt go, so they actually produce less direct heat....

but it doesnt matter, because all the energy is eventually converted to heat, so basically, anything you can do to decrease watts being used will lower temps, in addition to your electric bill.

Good point. I need to point out that the fish room is heated by electricity:(

So the extra heat is good for winter but bad for summer.

Also, the room is quite humid and bright ----> my wife's flower is blooming...in winter (that made some of the guests very confused during the Thanks-Giving dinner)

Get some more plants Dong, might as well use all that ambient light for something.

If the heat is 17 degrees above ambient, you're going to have some issues in the summer. MH's seem to be kind of overkill in shallow tanksm so T5s may be a good solution for you, as they seem to excel in shallow/long tanks. A 4x54w T5 strip would probably light a 33long or a 55 better than a 2x175w halide system would.

The nice thing about T5s is after about 4 inches down, the coral is exposed to ALL of the bulbs, so you tend to get very even/spread colors, as opposed to halides where you can get the top of the coral colored, and the sides brown (especially in setups with only 1 halide)

You've got how many tanks now Dong? Buy one of those T5 fixtures...see how stuff does under it. If it doesnt do well, swap the t5s onto a shallower tank or something and move some halides over the 75.

I have a Tek light t-5 on my 90 gallon tank, all the soft corals are doing better than under MH but SPS look like crap.

How many bulbs Dong? and is this the 90 Xtall, or a standard 90?

It is a 90 high, 4 bulbs HO t-5 with independant reflectors. The green digi (the only SPS in the tank) is not that far from the light.

really? Hrm. Sure them not looking well is a light issue? I've never really dealt with T5s myself, but I got the impression on RC that you could keep SPS pretty well.

anyone else got any ideas?

As far as the heat issues, anything you can do to reduce wattage will reduce heat. If noicse isnt an issue, there are all sorts of neat surge devices you can make that will produce some really cool turbulent flow and dont use much power, but most of them make a lot of gurgling. you could reduce pump power that way.

Maybe better ventilation? Could you use all the heat this room is producing to heat the house, and then maybe use less electricity to heat the rest of the house?

The rest of the house is heated by forced hot water (don't ask me why). When I have one singe 150w MH on the tank, the green digi looks beautiful and grew a lot. After I switched to t-5, it looks very crappy.

Also, I use all Seios for flow and I don't have sump on all tanks except one.

id add a fan to try to move that warm air toward the rest of the house
