My new Baby Maxima

smcnally

Tankless
I got this at the meeting today (Thanks Jeremy!) This is my 5th clam (4 in tank now), but by far the smallest I've ever had. It is 2 inches. I was thinking I should bowl feed it after talking to some people today. How many times a week would you guys reccommend? Twice a week? Every couple days? I have it up nice and high in the tank and it seems to be doing great so far.

You may want to check your calcium level after so many clams go in it.

Bad pic of the little guy I picked up because he is sleeping, but he is so nifty :D

Nice clam,

Sure looks like a Crocea to me though?????

Edit
Nevermind, I get it now, the first clam is a max, the second and third are crocea (at first I thought they were all pics of the same clam). All nice clams!

Thought I would bump this because I'm curious to get an answer to the feeding Qs. I'll add a crummy pic, but at least it is open. I am really happy with it now that I see it under my lighting :D

Here's mine from Armando. My Trigger was VERY interested in the clam when I first put him in the tank. I'm watching him closely today. I had him on top of the rock, but he fell off. I'm hoping he'll attach if he's leaning up against it.

I have found IME that bowl feeding clams definately speeds up growth as well as aids in reducing stress of acclimation to tank parameters and lighting.
It is also highly recomended by alot of "experts" for small clams, 2.5" and under for whats that is worth.

I have also brought one clam back from almost dead with bowl feeding. I got a 3.5" clam that didnt ship well and had receded to about 2" with the mantel barely making over its existing shell. i thought for sure it was a goner. but I started daily feeding for 2 weeks then reduced to every other day.
then twice to 3 times weekly till it seemed to stablilize. It is now about 4" and doing great.

So now all my new clams get the treatment if they are small enough to fit in a large specimen container.

For those that don't know what bowl feeding is you take enough Tank water to cover your clam in the container of your choice. then squirt enough phyto plankton to color the water. Place the clam in the container for about 10 to 15 min or until the water is clear. this is done on top of adding phyto to your tank.

Well this is what i do, hopefully other will chime in too

my little maxima from cra (I will get a top down pic later)this one stinks but I will post it anyways.

You beat me to it. That thing has some sweet color.

IMO put it high up in the rock work those things love light.

troubleman still figuring out where to put it.
jeremy said to put them on the bottom because they are so small and they do jump alot,as long as your light is ok to have them there that is.

Nice pics guys. :)

Yeah, people call those little clams "mexican jumping beans" for a reason. I only put them up on the rockwork if the place they are going is such that they can't jump someplace you can't get them.

FWIW, a friend of mine has a number of croceas, a big derasa, and a killer blue squamosa under 6 t-5's in a 75, and has had really good growth and color retention. Any halide will grow clams on the bottom as long as it's not something like a weak 20k on an xtra deep tank.

I got some great pictures of it today. This clam is beautiful! It has stayed in the same spot all day, so hopefully it likes its rock. Here's the 2 pictures...
