My "new" tank now up and running on Cape Cod - Loving it!

Hi fellow reefers. I reintroduced myself this past November when I decided to get back into the hobby after moving here from Ct 3 years ago. My Red Sea Reefer 170 was a great choice! It's been up since November - fish include Starry Blenny, Pair tank raised Ocellaris, Randalls' goby + pistol, royal gramma, purple firefish, blue-yellow damsel, and six line wrasse - all who have been in the tank since the beginning. Only 1 loss since then (one damsel beach up its partner) And my new addition of an ORA pygmy filefish - the cutest fish ever! So I am fish-complete - no more at this point. Everyone gets along very well and don't want to mess with that harmony!

I have some lovely mature live rock, with mostly mushrooms, leathers, a gigantic super healthy gorgonian and assorted star and yellow polyps. And several euphlllia - I love corals that move and sway with the current. Am running 2 AI Primes and love them - both at about 40% mostly blue-white x 8 hours a day with 2-3 hour ramp up. I vary the lights periodically. I have had some trouble keeping zoas in this tank for some reason - think my lights were too low at first. Have just added a small second circulation pump to make a bit more flow. Will soon take pictures of the tank (and sump with skimmer etc.)

But for now, here's a link to a 2.5 minute video with "Finding Nemo" music (oh ha ha). Not a great video but it will give you an idea. (The LTA in the forefront has since died - my only major coral loss.) Cut / paste this:

So, its good to be back!

I would like to buy some more softies - mushrooms, zoas and might even try a BTA if someone has one since my male clown has taken up residence in my Colt and is, I think, loving it to death. Anyone on Cape Cod or nearby have things they want to sell? I don't have too much to trade. PM me if you have something you'd like to sell.

So.... I am back and happy to be on these forums with fellow reef addicts!

Very nice. I like the aquascape you have set up. Is that a gorgonian on the right?

Thanks. Yes. Purple gorgonian. I am astonished it is doing so well....fast growing with little to no extra care.

Hello from a fellow cape reefer. Tank looks great. Have met several other cape cod reefers on BRS but there doesn't seem to be to many. I'm in Sandwich and have several tanks full of softies, zoas, SPS and LPS. Love to trade for new stuff. In fact just met up today with a fellow cape cod reefer for a trade.
I'll PM with cell #.

Not sure the AI PRIMES would support an anemone and thus kinda scared of getting one who would love around and mess up aqusacping. I am looking for a second Kenya tree or colt for the male clown so he can alternate homes. On the flip side, does anyone have experience with BTA and AI prime lighting? Tank is 24" high. Lights 8" from water surface. See OP for lighting schedule. Would love to try one but am ultra cautious. Hate killing stuff :p

Hey Susan,

Tank looks great!

Just wanted to weigh in on the AI primes as I run three of them. Let's get it out of the way that I hated how they released the AI primes with false data!!! This is when I bought mine so I felt a little duked. But as far as the bta I have one and he has already split since I have had him and has also not moved since I had him 6+ months.

He sits at the top of the tank about 6 inches under water my lights are mounted about 6 inches above water. I do also run 4 24" ho t5 tho.... But I think they are enough light to support them. I have slowly got my lights up to about 80% on a 60 gal 36" x 18" x 18"

thanks for the reply Owen - don't know about the release issues with AI - I am pretty happy with them. I may bite the bullet and try a BTA if I can find a small one!

Thanks for the compliment. Tank is thriving...corals growing so much I had had to re-aquascape a bit. Will post a new video soon! Good luck with your tank....

Curious as to what skimmer you ended up with. It has to be something good in 7.5 to 8" of water right? What was your choice?
