My opinion on the dirt cheap 150 W HQI MH

A while back (I think before we moved the forum), I started a thread about a 150 W 10 K HQI (double ended) pendant from Aquatic Ecosystems. They were selling the bulb, ballast, bell shaped adjustable height pendant with horizontally mounted reflector for.....$150. I thought it was a misprint, but it wasn't, and the price is still valid. I bought one for a tank at work just to see what it would do. Here's my take on it:

The color:

The bulb puts out a very nice crisp white/blue light. I would say very similar to most 10 K bulbs

The PAR (photosynthetically available radiation):

Sorry, I don't have a light meter, but I would say judging by the comparison of the 175 W 10 K Hamilton with a poor reflector sitting a few doors away, it is significantly brighter. The bulb's been running for several months now, and to my eye there does not appear to be a dramatic drop off in light levels.

Lighting spead:

Here's the downfall of this fixture. The reflector clearly creates some 'hot' spots, just observations from my looking at the strength of the light reflected off a piece of paper. If the pendent is mounted high enough, and there is some surface water movement (glitter lines) I think the spread is good enough for the average tank, it would be perfect for a 30-50 gallon cube tank. Certainly good enough for a refugium, etc.

The tank under the light:

The tank I set up for this light is doing quite well. SPS are growing, etc. I think the tank would benefit with additional actinics for coral coloration, but that's true for just about any 10 K MH bulb. When the bulb gets old maybe I'll try a replacement 20 K bulb, or one of the 50 K Iwasakis (they're still making these right?)

Greg,
This sounds perfect for my 45g softy/LPS tank. Right now I only have 4x75w VHO on it and it just doesn't seem to have enough "punch". Maybe I can retro one of these 150w 10K HQI into my 45g hood and keep 2x75w actnic VHO.
Thx for the review.

Someone from Geisemann told me once that 150 HQI was sufficient for very good coloration and growth on SPS for a shallow tank (like my 29g).. and that a 250 would be too much. I ended up with a single 250 and growth is good but coloration is not (I have a 10K bulb). I may end up trying a 150 setup and/or a 250W 14k bulb eventually. Thanks for the info Greg.

Doesn't sound too good for my 125.

I'm looking for 3 lamps at 250 watts. I need the whole deal; ballasts, bulbs, etc.
They are going to be hidden from sight, so I don't need nice fixtures.

Any recommendations?

Moe, have you thought of DIY DE 250 watt HQI ?

You'd need three sets of sockets, bulbs and ballasts along with some clear
glass to use as a UV shield and some clips to mount them to the underside of
your canopy. The ballasts and bulbs are available from a variety of places, and
I've seen the 250 watt HQI bulb sockets in the petwhse catalog.

At this point I think that the double ended 250 watters in the Reef Optics III fixtures are the way to go. Remember that with the double ended bulbs having a good reflector is extremely important. Unfortunately for your tank, you're looking at about $900 for just this lighting, and you still might want some actinic.

That was the one thing I did notice w/ my 10Ks in the oceanlights - great growth, but I found myself wishing for actinics too.

I know this thread's very old, but....

Okay, so I have one of these above a tank at work, still working very well after more than 3 years now. I noticed that they raised the price on these soon after I purchased mine years ago, but I was just back on the Aquatic Ecosystems site, and they are back down to the $150 price.....amazing. That's bulb, ballast, fixture, hanger....complete!

Nice! This would go well over that 60g cube I keep saying I'll put up.

Maybe mount a T-5 actinic tube along the front edge of the tank to add some color.

(edit to add) What are the dimensions of the bell housing Greg? Could you swap out the ballast for a 250w if I decided the 150 wasn't enough down the road?
