Need a host for a False Perc

vinnycaz

I wish i had that
hey everyone, this is my first post here! so i am new to the game and need a anemone for my clown so that he can host in it...not sure what kind i need but does anybody out there have it? (i'll check RC to answeer my anemone/clown ?) thanks!

Welcome to the Boston Reefers Vinny!

The easiest, most available host anemone is a Bubble Tip Anemone. (someone else will have to chime in with a scientific name). Check the "critters" forum in the marketplace to see if anyone has them for sale. I recall seeing a few posts for them in the past week.

Sometimes tank raised clowns have trouble figuring out what anemones are for, but it sounds like they often get the idea eventually. Some people have stuck pictures of clowns in anemones to the side of the tank for a while, to give their clowns the idea (no kidding).

Good luck, Nate

I'm not exactly sure what you meant by new to the game, but if its a reasonably new tank, convential wisdom says wait a while. Make sure you have really strong lighting before you try an anenome, if you dont, sometimes clowns will host in a lot of other stuff.

I've heard of them hosting in anythign from frogspawn corals, to hairy mushrooms, to matts of zoanthids.

I have a marron clownfish that has taken a likeing to a bubble tip Anemone. it wouldn't pay any attention to the Anemone for 3 weeks before it decided to host in it. now it hardly leaves it.

cool, ya my tank is up and running since jan 1st, i have a candy anemoe in there ( white tentacles with purple dot tips and a bright orange foot) dont thinnk this will work, so i'll try and snag a bubble tip.

Yes, Condylactus (sp?) anemones are atlantic species, and aren't very good clown hosts (clowns are all Pacific).

Bubble tips are pretty easy to come by. Many LFS have them, and the Brown/Green ones are available very often here on the board because they frequently divide in peoples tanks.

We have a pair hosting in a leather under VHO lights. What are you running for lights? If you do not have MH lights, this might be a good choice. I will try to find picture of them.

The leather was the size of a golf ball over a year ago when we got it. When it got to baseball size the clowns moved in. It is now almost basketball size.

I have to false percs that just started hosting in a sabae anenome the past few days. They would not take to a breen bta but finally took to the sabae. I tried the pic on the side of the glass trick which didnt help. I decided one day to skip feeding them in the morning by the night they were really hungry. I placed a piece of krill in the sabae and they went after it before the sabae ate it. Now they only leave for short amounts of time. In my other tank I have a 3in maroon clown who is hosting on a rock covered in watermelon mushrooms. It loves it hides all its food under the mushrooms. Good Luck

I have a set that host in my eleganc eand another that host in my frogspawn you do not need an anemone to keep clowns happy they will host in just about anything :)

How about a nice neon green carpet

The false perc's or Ocellaris Clown's natural host is the Heteractis Magnifica or "Ritteri" anemone. However, this anemone needs expert care and water conditions and may not be suitable for every tank. It also grows very large ans as such requires a large tank or a tank dedicated to anemones. The good news is that in captivity, the Ocellaris Clowns will accept the Entamacea Quadricolor, or Bubble Tip anemone as a host. This would be your best bet since they are more hardy and more available than the Ritteri. Good luck!

heres a pic of one of the true perc pair I have in a toadstool leather.
