Not sure what to do, one of our circulation pumps went nuts, started bubbling and smoking. We unplugged it and took it out of the tank. Now a half hour later the coperband is laying on the bottom, and we don't see the yellow tang. Is charcoal the way to go. Or what would you do.

Yes carbon like you have never carboned before. A water change is best too. That is how I lost everything a year or so ago when my skimmer pump did the same thing. But it was over night so I didn't see it till morning. If you need anything like carbon or salt whatever lmk. Good luck I hope everything works out. If you have a spare tank like a ten or something it might be good to set it up and get your copperband in it.

Tons of carbon and a good sized water change and keep fingers crossed.

If doing a sizable water change make sure to match temp, salinity, and alk.

Thanks Guys, Carbon is running, The water change is going to have to wait for a bit, I just did a water change yesterday, so I only have about 10 gal. of RODI made. Will cross my fingers and when I wake at 6 the water should be ready . Coperband still on the bottom, but she is upright and breathing.

Wouldn't hurt to also add a polyfilter and chemi-clean in addition to the carbon if you have them on hand. That's what I ran when they cleaned the carpets in my office, and between that and a few large water changes I managed to save everything. Good luck!!!

Yup, carbon, carbon, carbon, and then a poly filter or three in the AM after a ride to the LFS if you don't already have any on hand.

Distilled water is cheap. usually $1 or less/gallon.

Thanks again. Well every thing made it through the night. Coperband is not very active but is up at the top under the frag rack. The tang is also out and about. We were lucky that we were standing at the tank talking. It took a minute to realize something sounded off, As soon as we did the smoke started, By the time I pointed out the cord, and BOB unplugged it, the tank was full of smoke. I'll add some Poly this morning, and then I'm off to the beach...

That sounds horrible. Best of luck to you Hope everything makes it out alright.

People have said this has happened before? What is the cause of this Got me worried about one more thing now.

Sometimes water gets paced the seal on the cord and will cause a short that makes smoke that bubbles out and it is toxic. To prevent it I suggest a good quality GFCI outlet. They can tend to be expensive but worth it.

Hope everything is ok. What brand is the pump? I had a Ocean Runer did the same thing to me last year.

Everything is looking good. Copperband is still in seclusion for the most part. But he does keep coming out every now and then looking for food. So I guess that is a good sign.one of the new maxi jets. it was plugged in through a DC 4 I didn't actually chewdk the pump out yet. It was a good thing we were standing right next to the tank just about, when it happened.

That happened about a month ago to my make up water. I had just made the water and I noticed the smell of burning plastic, it was a MJ1200. The only thing I lost was 55gal of water.

Good Luck
Derek

Thanks, Day 2 and everyone looks Happy.
