im looking to change my sand substrate out for crushed coral, whats the best route without causing a cycle?
should i just put the crushed coral over the sand or should i try to take the sand out with syphoning?
anyone have suggestions?
I would like to hear your reasons for Crushed Coral if you can? haha I actually did the opposite and got rid of CC for sand due to all the issues with CC i was hearing about
Why the change? I avoid crushed coral like the plauge.
If you really want to change, I could just scoop it out little by little over a week or two. If you add it on top of the sand it will settle in and you will have a mix.
ok ...i believe crushed coral is thiker and is going to hold more dietrus thus making nitrates rise
thus making your job harder when come to maintenance
dsb with a refuigium keeps nitrates low ,because the biological bacteria and dietrus, and all that fight underneath the sand while u clean the top
thats why u never really wanna move the sand around to much .then u would be releasing all that thus messing up your water quality
if u really wanna change it ( wich i wouldnt) .......i would do really thick bed of sand or nothing at all bb )
doit while doing water changes (siphone out your sand )and doit slowly cus your taking away from your bilogical bacteria witch is gonna cause a cycle
Thanks to all that responded, i appreciate the inputs.
To answer most of your questions well my reasoning behind it would be because i would like to be able to add another powerhead or lower the ones i have in the tank and i dont want all the sand blowing around, also i like the look of crushed coral and also because i can place corals right on top of the crushed coral and they will continue to spread/grow
Well if nobody uses cc anymore, what sand do you use for your substrate? i would want something of bigger particle size if possible
Hey Trevor, I have what you need. Large grain white sand(unused) Powerheads don't move it, and its too small to trap waste. I have plenty for ya, call me if u want it.
Ps
I have a mp10, a koralia 4, and 2x hob filters on a 40b. Sand stays put!
not to take over the trend but my question is right along the lines of yours,
so i am going to upgrade in the near future but i hate the sand bed i have, so my question is does anybody have experience with this problem? i want to change my sand but i am afraid it will start another cycle in my tank. The other option would be to add my old sand to the new, any ideas? I have a very fine sand and want to make it more of a crushed coral sand because the fine sand make to much of a dust cloud. from what i have read i do want a heavy grain sand instead of crushed coral but any info on the upgrade and moving sand would be nice
It's usually easier and safer to remove most of the old sand and add mostly new sand, while keeping a fraction of the old to seed the new.
Also FWIW finer sand tends to be a constant sand storm for a while, but then it usually settles in relation to the flow to some extent. If the tank is super high flow then bare bottom might be best. There are lots of ways to run a reef tank
+1 to John k. Bacteria and sludge will build up over time and add considerable mass to fine grain sand. It takes time, so start as low flow and add more as time goes by.
Large grain sand etc will avoid the problem but I have to add 1 caveat .... nothing grows in it. Its for looks only. Sandbed fauna ie; tube worms etc all prefer soft lightweight sand and will not live in heavy coarse sand.(generalization with some exceptions)
If you do use heavy stuff, use a shallow layer and keep it stirred.
I use both in different tanks and think each serves a purpose.
Crushed coral would work great for a coral only tank as a growing medium for soft corals. No large food n poo particles to get trapped in the crushed coral bed.
