Need to refinish my wood stand ...advice?

Looking for advice for refinishing my wood stand. It is looking worn and needs a redo. Would like to stain and seal it.

By no means am I a pro but I would start with a heavy grit sand paper like 100 or 80. then work your up to your desired feel. I would probably at stop 200 or 220 but im a glutton for punishment. Then stain and satin or semi gloss poly. Let the poly dry and do a very light sanding with a very light course paper or wool. MAKE SURE POLY IS 100% DRY or you will see the steel wool. Repeat as necessary. I would do at least twice.

Thanks! I was not clear in my original post. I know how to finish but, need to do it while my reef aquarium is in use. How do I do it and protect the tank inhabitants?

I have worked on my stand and canopy while running.

I have painted the stand and installed a fan into my canopy which included drilling a whole.

For both I put clean drop cloth over the tank and sump. And crossed fingers. Got a little saw dust in tank did not affect anything.

I would wrap everything I could in plastic and be very careful.

varnish will hold up much better against the salt water. as long as you dont drip in the tank you will be fine.

and also try and cover your tank so the dust from sanding doesnt get into it.

old school, sand it by hand, and you wont get dust everywhere. Although you should still cover it jsut in case.
