So, I never thought i'd say this, but I actually LIKE the new Hydor Koralia pump! I picked it up at Skipton's who were getting rid of the old (at 30% off) and had the new models in.
These things, for me, have historically been total pieces of cr*p and they just ended up in the "Land of Misfit Marine Parts bin" because they were just poorly made - had a bar impeller, rattled around, lots of random noisiness, and the gaurd fell off exposing these decapitating fan blades to the general public which can end badly.
The new one I got was the biggest one they had (6W, 1400 GPH flow) for $64.99. It's got a shaftless magnetic impeller, it's smaller, much sturier overall design. The flow is strong and easily directable. Completely silent so far.
I'm wondering how these will hold up to a wavemaker - love blowing things up...
