Oceanic Biocube 8 Filtration Question

jroczniak

Fish Filet!
I have read that a lot of people use the Purigen Filters in their nano tanks.

My question is where exactly do I put it - My tank is un-modded and the chambers are as below:

1 - Regular Oceanic 8 filter, Heater
2 - Floss at the bottom, Live rock rubble (thinking of changing because water level is never very high.
3 - return pump

Thanks for the advice!

Jake

Take he liverock rubble out. It is a detritus trap and will result in nitrates down the road.

Try Floss first chamber.
Purigen at the beginning of 2nd chamber and chemipure elite at the end of 2nd chamber.
Heater in last chamber with return pump.

Purigen breaks down the organic waste and then the chemipure elite removes resulting nitrates so I would make sense for purigen to come first.

Thanks for the reply Nick.

In the first chamber should I not use the default filter for the tank?
In the second chamber I think I will need some sort of media rack so I can stack this stuff. Also I have not been filling the nano past the fill line which keeps the water really low in chambers 2, 3. Is it ok to go up past the line as much as I want you think?

Thanks!

Generally, the water heights in the chambers should be different because it is indicating the controlled flow happening back there. It is pouring from one chamber to the next. You can probably fill a little more if it does not affect this.

A lot of times, stock filter pads are just poly floss with carbon inside. The chemipure is carbon among other things. Maybe you can put purigen underneath polyfloss in the first chamber and chemipure elite in the second chamber.

Thanks for the reply! I think the stock filter is carbon. It stands the full height of the first chamber which is full all the time. If I follow the fill lines, the second chamber usually only has like 2 inches in it max which is weird and also makes it loud when the water falls in from the first chamber.

I actually ordered a neat little water director thing online the other day and I am going to make my own acrylic media rack for the purigen and chemipure this weekend.

Here is a similar rack to what I am going to make
