Oily surface

Hi,

I have a 55 G and I have a hangon overflow to my sump where my hangon protein skimmer is located. I see some oily surface on top of the tank. It doesnt seem to move into the overflow. It just stay stand still on the surface. Can someone tell me how to move this surface oil away?

Do you have any surface agitation? If not place a powerhead up high in the tank so you get some surface agitation. That should help!

Is the water level actually flowing over and down the teeth of the overflow or are the teeth at the same level as the water. My overflow did that when the hang on box slipped lower than the water and it was not surface skimming.

I agree, the overflow should be just taking the surface water.

What they said above, and also, if the teeth of the overflow are too small, or constricted by the growth of coraline algae, or critters in general, then you might not get the surface scum off as efficiently.
