Painting tank trim?

Hey Everyone,

So I am thinking about buying a tank/stand from a fellow reefer. Currently the tank and stand do not match. The tank has oak trim and the stand is painted black...

The mismatch does not bother me too much, but the wife would prefer that the combo is the same color.

Aside from building a black canopy to cover the oak trim I think painting is my only other option..

Has anyone had experience painting the trim of an aquarium before?

If so, what was your experience like and what type of paint did you use?

Would like to know your thoughts

Thanks

Aside from the chipping over time... Were the initial results good? Could you tell it was painted?

My original 120 tank was oak and the stand black so I painted the trim. As Rentalcoot mentioned it will take a couple coats. Once I got it done you really couldn't tell. Well, I could, but then again, I painted it. No one else every mentioned/questioned it.

Probably have pics and more info in my original build thread.

Close up you could tell. Some streaking but other than that only way to tell is if your looking for it. I chose a dark brown because I didn't like the oak. On my 54 gal I did a mahogany. Look at my build under pics

Krylon Fusion works great , that's what I used on my tank that was originally oak trim and I made it black.
I taped/papered off all the glass, sanded all the plastic trim to roughen it up a little, then put on 3-4 light coats of Fusion. It looks as good as if it was bought that way.

Awesome, I will have to look into the Krylon Fusion..

Does it seem to hold up over time, or do you also experience some minor chipping?
