Has anyone tried this unit yet ?
Does it work ?
I believe it's from Sprung's 2 little fishies
I like the idea.....

I have one running on my 30. I got it when I had some dino's last year. Not sure what eventually solved the problem but after I added the reactor the dino's went away. I've kept it running and I change out the media maybe every 3 months. I run Rowaphos in it. Its not helping in removing or keeping back the Bryopsis I got sometime at the end of the summer though.

The unit is nice, but removing/adding media is a pain due to the screws on the cover. You need to actually use a screwdriver to get the top on/off which for me just is a big pain when all you want to do is replace some media.

Other than that its nice and simple. You could certaintly build one but for $30.00 it was worth it for me to just buy it. I might even get another to run carbon when my new tank gets set up.

I know some people have had bad luck with acro's getting lighter or bleaching and dying using the Rowaphos but I haven't experienced that at all. If you do a search on RC you can read about the good and the bad experiences. Locally I think Spryo had a bad experience running the media but I may have the wrong person.

We are running one part time. I would not just start it up and run it full power. I do not like to change anything too quickly. It does do a good job for us.

thanks for the feed back
would Phosban run any better than Rowaphos ?
would it make any difference ?
I like the idea you had about running carbon thru one.

As i understand it they work equally well but the rowa requires signicantly more cleaning,to prevent dicoloration of your water.

Is there a larger size? Do you need a larger size, or do you string them together?
I want to use it on a 180 (plus sump, grow out tanks and refug)

the rowa phos seems to work better in my unit but it tends to clump together so just keep an eye on it.

although for the price differrence phos ban is just as good dollar for dollar IMO.

i would definately run atleast your first gallon of water into a container i run till i get clear water. remember these are iron based products so if it goes in the tank and you dont get it out you will have a contiual build up

make sure you keep an eye to make sure the top is lightly tumbling so it doesn't harden on you.

lastly find out what the problem is that causing your phosphates so you can stop using the reactor once you take care of the issue, its a great tool to patch the problem for a short time.

I bought one at Macna because I was running high phosphates. It took care of the problem in no time - but like Paul said, don't run it 24/7 when you first start out. The quick change could cause problems. If I remember correctly, I started running it 3-4 hours per day, then increased an hour a day. I ran it for about 6 months - by that time my phophates were 0. I ran phosban in it. I also like the idea of running carbon in it but like Kim said, changing the media is a PIA. Much easier to empty a mesh bag over a trash can and refill. Make sure you check your phophates before you get it - make sure you actually need it. I'm not running mine now, but I keep it as backup just in case the phosphates rise again.

I have no problem with the Rowaphos changing the color of my water. As Delta said and it also says in the insx for the Rowaphos that if using in a reactor you need to run RO water through it until it runs clear. It doesn't take much for it to run clear.
