Phytoplankton smell

I bought some live phyto from an LFS. It was kept in a fridge but it smells like sulfur.. like really smelly.

Is that normal, or is my phyto actually dead?

Dead phyto smells like rotten fish to me. Live phyto doesn’t really smell like anything. Examine it under a microscope if you have one.

I think it’s the die-off some phyto at the bottom due to lack of phyto suspension in the bag over the course of days in storage.

It should not smell like Hydrogen Sulfide, or rotten fish, for sure. Good phyto that is real concentrated smells rich of the oils they produce and a little like the ocean.

I’ll call the LFS and see what they say. I think this stuff is just dead. Not fishy, just strong hydrogen sulfide
