Plumbing anyone?

I need a gate valve replaced in my house so I can use another hose spiggot(sp?) for my RODI this winter. It is a copper pipe for an outdoor garden hose. I have no clue how to replace this, though I'm sure it's easy. It just needs to be cut out and another put in it's place. Anyone know how to do this? I'd rather not pay out the fortune to hire a plumber to do this simple task. I need to make something happen fast I'm running out of topoff water.

Matt, I think HD has some valves that install with a compression fitting, so you don't have to sweat the joint. If you find the valve you're looking for, just turn off the water supply to the old pipe. Cut the pipe as close as possible to the old valve with a hacksaw. Then just slide on the new valve, and tighten the compression nut.

That would be perfect. Is there a formal name for them? I need to know what I'm looking for because you KNOW I won't get any quality assistance at HD:p

"compression" is the key word. There may be regular spigots that have compression fittings, or I know you can get the valves under your sink (they're smaller and have an oval shaped handle - can't remember the real name for those) in compression format. Those are usually 3/8" MPT on the output side, so look in the regular valve section first.

After you cut off the old valve, you should sand around the last inch of pipe until it's shiney and coppery. Otherwise the compression ferule might leak.
