Preventing fish from Jumping out

All great suggestions, but a canopy is the best way imo. Eggcrate and mesh will keep most fish in, but I've had plenty of smaller Wrasse and Anthias get through those small holes over the years. It does just as it's description suggests also. It diffuses light. I'll bet at least 30% or more light gets bounced off the egg crate and out to the room. FWIW, I can notice a huge difference in how lit the room is when I remove the egg crate from the one tank that still has it when the lights are on.

True...but I believe the problem was that the fish were jumping, under the hood, and hitting the lights.

The problem was indeed the fish jumped and hit the lights, but I do not have a hood. How much do hoods generally cost to fit a 55? I'd love a hood because it would make the set up look that much nicer.

Are you handy? You can build your own. They aren't that hard. Just good grade (furniture grade) plywood and some 2Xwhatevers. Here's the shell of one I made for my bowfront:

And the finished product:

Unfortunately I am not handy. The wife hates if, but I pretend I am lol

Awe nutz... it's a good option. Commercial canopies can cost ya. I just made another this weekend for the 38 Gallon I'm setting up. It cost me 25 bucks in pine so far. Add in hardware like hinges and some stain.. and done.

I built this one (not done) this weekend for 20 some odd dollars in materials. I'm going to pimp it this week with trim and molding and such. Then paint the inside and stain the outside.

When are you starting the one for my 72? :D

They are stupid easy. The hardest part is ripping through Home Depot's crappy supply of banana shaped wood *sigh*

Other than that, table saw, planer, and about a 12 pack :)

You're hired! What are you drinking? :D

The banana shaped wood should match the bow nicely. :p

table saw and a twelve pack are a geat recipe for a fingerless woodworker...good luck with that.

No no no... the 12 pack is for in between coats of stain and such :) Can't frag without me fingers!!

I use eggcrate but had decided to cut 1 inch holes under the MH: About a 4x6 matrix. Would you believe that my wrasse was able to launch himself right through the 1 inch opening?

I did this to cut down the amount of light begin bounced off the eggcrate. It really helped with the light but failed the primary test.

I just picked up some small 1/2" black plastic netting from HD. Stretched it in my hood and took the top off. Works great and can't see a light difference.
