I am neew in this hobby and looking for general help. I have an etss evolution 500 protein skimmer with a danner mag 9.5 pump running it. I have raised the the protein skimmer out of the sump to keep consistant flow going to the skimmer. You can run the skimmer in or out of sump. When i dial the skimmer in i get more of a tea colored water, if i adjust a little to get thicker foam it seems to not work that much. It is a venturi down draft design skimmer. If anyone has any info, my tank is a 72 gallon bow oceanic. I have a mandarin, gold head goby, 2 clowns, and a cleaner wrasse. I have a 20 gallon sump with pond matrix, and a danner mag 9.5 return pump. I also have hammer frag and duncan frag with 65 pounds of live rock. So i think i should be getting some kind of bio load. When it does work the water don't look dark brown like some pictures i see. Any help with this type of skimmer, i think it's rated for 250 gallon tank maybe just to big it works very little.
