pulsing xenia question

how long does it take to grow? has anyone ever successfully had their entire back glass covered in it? I think it would look pretty cool if back glass was covered in it pulsing. What are your thoughts? I have a piece on bottom of my tank leaning up against the back glass now with nothing around it hoping it starts to growing up the glass

Growth rate seems highly variable. Some people seem to have problems keeping there growth in check. Others (like myself) have them grow very slow.

Mine grow slow also but atach to the back easy i have a piece on a rock that i move from my 150 to my 13 gallon rest the rock on the back wall and somehow now its not in the rock pretty much transfer to the over flow its way bigger then before but have seen not more grow after that .
But you all on the right track i like the look of it on the back wall with gsp also .
In my 60 gallong i have two pice now trying to get it attach two piece of gsp and xenia and pulsing xenia .
Good luck !

My large tank back in Wales, had it everywhere. It grew like a weed. I used to cut it up, to kill it, that only made the matter worse. In the end i used to inject acid into the base of the xenia to destroy it!

Xenia thrives in a high nutrient system. It is very invasive. No way I'd put in my display. Learned this in my first tank. Same for GPS.

If you use it, put it in a nano tank just in case you change your mind =). It was the first coral of my first tank. I never introduced it to another.

i like it very much for the only reason looks good and to no be a fish only tank it add some stuff to it .
its good in nano tanks like state above i spend so much money on corals and always something happens so i keep it to easy stuff and this thing wont die even if you try to kill it so its for me
the last tank i did on my office i just taking out couple large colonies of acan the i buy very expensive from fellow reefers . and after someone mess up my tank over feeding they never recoup .
i lost two large colonies of acan,my large Cynarina its gone a colonies of sun coral . frogspawn . a big brain the i got from dong its coming back but still hurt , some of my hairy mushroms never fully opends since then and most of my high end zoos disappear or melt, lost Duncan, and hammers .
it really took me by surprise .
but my gsp still greener then ever lol
so all my tanks have a piece of it here and there its my only reason i still call my tanks a reef tank :)

That is a good reason to have it.

I have a 29BC and am very new to the hobby. I put in a 4" round piece of xenia about a month ago and did exactly what you are doing. It now has probably a 4"x2" bush growing up the back wall. I also found a one head frag in a corner of the tank that I stuck a pin through and used 2 magnets to keep it up against the back wall and when it attaches I figure ill just take off the magnets and pull out the pin. Like you said I think it will look cool to see xenia pulsing away on the back wall.

When Xenia were on the back, it seemed to climb up the back, but like a slinky. Meaning, it didn't leave the old part, it just seemed to move up the wall. It occupied the top 4 inches or so, but did NOT fill in back down. I think it kind of crowded itself out.

They are not commonly sold in LFS because apparently they don't ship well, as I was told. They also grow in high nutrient water. This means that if you are growing SPS, they probably will not grow for you. I think this keeps the supply down since most sellers of corals don't have high nutrient tanks. I used to supply a LFS in Miami with tons. Xenia would grow on the top of the rock structure. I would simply place palm sized rocks in the middle of the forest. Within 3 weeks they would be covered. That and selling eagle eye zoanthids funded my entire tank for years.

As others have said, I cannot stress how invasive they can be. If a fragment falls to the back of the rock structure, it will likely grow. It does peel off reasonably easily, but the pieces disperse and spread. More recently, I kept them on a separate rock in the sand bed and away for the main structures and glass.

They are really cool to watch.

yes I have a piece stuck to glass now. i moved the rock that's covered in it down little more of side glass I there in no aquascape near it I do rember it grows quick I just never had it on glass I went with the side instead of back to avoid the spread
