I have a copper banded butterfly in my tank and over the last 2-3 days....he has been getting dark??? the white in his stripes has a tannish/lt. browinsh color to it?? what does this mean?? if it is something wrong with him i would like to get it taken care of??? lincon (copper banded...copper penny...lincon on a penny...get it??) is one of my favorites in the tank...he "dances" for me at feeding time!!! i know i might be a little crazy..but yes i name all my fish!! (and my clown pair are named bonnie and clyde!! heehee) lol... please if any ideas...let me know!! have a great TGIF!! Lori

It is a little unclear from the post, he has been in the tank how long? And the dark color has only been the last few days? I have only had this happen with ones which were super stressed from me trying to pair them. What does the circle on his tail look like?

he has been in my tank for about 2 months...he is swimming and eating just fine! the circle on his tail is still the same..the dark circle with the white around it...but the only way i can explain it is he looks "dirty" ...like a tanish/brownish color..and you really notice it on his white bands!! any ideas?? lori

What are you feeding him? He might not be getting something essential to his diet.

Also, how old is the tank, what size is it, and what are your nitrate and phosphate levels?

my tank is a 2 year old reef.it is a 72 gallon bow front..he eats frozen spirulina brine shrimpthey also get some prime reef flakes in between feedings...but he is a wicked rock picker!! tested everything and did a 20% water change (figured it wouldnt hurt!) and everything test perfect! ok so the only way i can figure out how to explain it is to show you...pics arent great....but i think you can tell the discoloration on him! poor guy!

That looks pretty bad. Have you added any fish lately? It looks like a disease that atacks the skin like brook in clowns.

what is it called and what do i do?? no nothing except for some polyps have been added! help this poor guy! please! Lori

Lori, the pics didnt come out, do you have any others? I lost a yellow tang this week to some disease that sounds like the one your CBB has. The tang started with a small brown spot and then it spread. I would like to see if what your fish has is what my fish had.

did the pic work this time...it shows the pics on my end for both...let me know..i just want to try everything i can to help this poor guy...he is one of my favorites!

I can see the pic, but I don't know what the disease could be.

no, it just shows a small box with a red X in the middle. Flighty was able to see the pics so it must be on my end.
My tang was my fav fish and I was so upset when it died. I tried to find out what the fish had but I havent been able to actually get a disease name so I treated it with antibacterial medicine but that did NOTHING. I hope with your pics, someone will be able to identify the culprit. Good luck.....

He might not be getting his nutrients from brine (even spirulina brine). Have you tried Hikari mysis? Try selcon soaking brine as well or freshly hatched live brine naupili (the freshly hatched with their yolk sac, not live variety found in the store). If I had a guess, it looks like he's not getting some essentail nutrient (kind of like how humans get scurvy), which has possibly lead to a secondary infection.

I'd also try some garlic in addition to the mysis and selcon.

What about temp spikes during the day? I've had that stress out fish in the past.

thanks for the ideas... I add garlic and vitamin C to their food...and the tank does not have any temp changes cuz i run a a/c in that room 24/7 ....it stays within 2 degrees.... between the actinic lights and the MH....but i am gonna try the mysis food and see if that helps him out! like i said he acts perfectly fine..and eats...just has that funny color to him! have a safe weekend everyone..and thanks for the help! Lori
