question about alkalinity

For future reference its 2.8 * meq/l = dkh

No prob just do a water change but make sure you test the new water.

I am not sure which would be worse, the fact that your tank has reached 18+ DKH, or a sudden drop to normal levels...

I have never had a tank go so high, so honestly can't say as I am experienced and know the best thing to do in such circumstances. A sudden fluctuation may be more harmful than letting your tank naturally drop to natural levels. How did you system get so high? Was it a sudden spike from mis-calculating your dosing, or a long term build up?

I would also second what Dave said and try to let it drop suddenly. Whatever you're dosing to maintain calcium and alk I'd stop alk and test daily and then start back up dosing once it drops back down to normal range.

I'd also suggest altering your dosing so that you don't let the alk get that high again.

yes im a fool it was a total mis calc on my half....was doing some reading today and as dave suggested letting the tank naturally drop should be the safest way. thanks guys

When mine went around 32 I figured the best thing to do was little daily waterchanges followed by a big one when the jump wasn't as huge. Good luck.

Well that's good that it was a miscalculation... What was the reading if you don't mind me asking?

well figured out the whole steam that lead to the mis dossage if thats even a word...but anyway.. when i calibrated my acjr ph prob i made a mistake so the ph was reading wrong.(too low) so i was buffering the water to raise ph and alk well i used a seachem test for alk and ph to cross the probe and sure enough the prob was reading 7.89 and the test kit was reading around 8.5 tested the alk again last night and it was at 8 meq/l (22.4 dkh!!!!figured that out by the formula given by jbishop :D) so i decided to change two gallons last night and will do another two each day until the alk gets back in check in the mean time i will be recalibrating my ph prob.

Sorry to hear man. If there is anything I can help you with let me know.

At least you have a plan.
