question about superglue in tank...

I got a frag of an acan and it's only 2 heads so I want to attach it to a bigger rock. I searched the threads and saw that it's ok to use Ethyl Cyanoacrylate gel super glue.

My question is how long does it take to cure under water? Thanks...

i would remove the rock, super glue it down, wait about 5-10 minutes, and then put it back in the tank. i don't think you can super glue something in water. you need to dry the rock off where it is going to be attached.

i did a kenya tree with it.. dab the glue on the rock and on the end of the coral.. then put it together then into the tank... mine cured in the tank.. but make sure it won't move for a minute or 2 while in the water

i super glue all the time under water just make sure you work the glue into the rock with alittle friction.

There's alot of cases where it's nearly impossible to remove the rock from the tank. I put a bunch of super glue on the bottom of the frag and drop it in the tank. As soon as the glue hits the water it gels up but can still bond.

I then hold it place for approx 60 - 90 seconds to allow the glue to bond. This method works for me nine out of ten times.

I also glue underwater about 90% of the time. Just put a bunch of glue on the frag, I will usualy leave it for a minute to let the gel set up a bit and then right in the water and hold it where I want it for about a minute. As Ray mentioned, I kind of work it into the rock a bit. If it doesn't hold, I take it out and add a little more glue and go again.

Super Glue

Super glue will cure underwater and is used by many to glue down frags. I have found another method (not sure where I found it but probably on RC) for attaching corals to difficult places (vertical services, rough uneven surfaces, etc.) or that are pre-mounted on rubble or reef plugs.

First you mix up some 2-part epoxy like Aquamend. Then you superglue the frag to the epoxy. You then coat the bottom of the epoxy with super glue and attach the epoxy and frag to your rock. Press down on the epoxy so that it conforms to the rock and sticks. This will spread the super glue and provide a large surface area forthe glue to take hold.

The superglue alone works ok but I have had instances where the frag falls off and gets lost, especially for larger frags that are pre-mounted on rubble or reef plugs.
