Recommendation on a brand of calcium& alk.

arda

sohal tang
Hi Everyone, I would like to get some recommendation on a good brand that works for calcium and ALK. I will be using it with dosing pump. I used to use ESV and I was happy with it. Anyone knows any better brand? its been 2 years that I don't have tank so I am coming back and I kind of forgot about it so any help would be great. Thanks guys.

I've been using part 2 from bulk reef supply. It's pretty cheap and works great. I've been using that along with 2 of their dosing pumps

I like red sea cause I have to use liquid in my dosing pump. Powder is much cheaper

If you want one supplement for BOTH Ca and alk, kalk is your only answer. Otherwise it needs to be 2 part additive or else Ca+alk will essentially precipate out as sand.

Bulk reef supply sells powders you can mix up an I've had good results with them but most lfs sell B Ionic and other stuff that will work just as well. I try and save a few bucks and mix them myself from the bulk reef kits

For 2 part I reccomend pickling lime. Like mrs. Wages. It's cheap and raises calc and alk evenly. You start trying to raise them individually you will be pulling out your hair. They effect each other so treat them together

Yeah. Dripping kalkwasser at night is pretty easy. There are good links in the "Useful Threads" sticky here in Reef Talk.

If you want a 2 part like ESV, then you can make your own. Randy Holmes Farley wrote up a good home made 2 part supplementation recipe years ago. The alk part was dissolved baking soda or washing soda. The calcium part was calcium chloride - or dissolved Dowflake ice melter. Pedalow could be used instead of Dowflake.

Here's a link to Randy's article:

Nowadays, it might be easier to obtain the calcium chloride from a vendor like Bilk Reef Supply.
