Reef Octopus Extreme Series EXT-160

OK, time to buy. I "think" that I have settled on the Reef Octopus Extreme 160. I have a 75g with a 20g sump. Does this seem like a good pick? Anyone running one. Again I am looking for a quiet skimmer. Thanks Tom

I've been running one for a month or so. Seems like a great skimmer for the pricepoint and small footprint.

I have heard of some issues with the pump restarting, but from what I gather this is much more an issue when mesh modding or possibly even just running the red or purple performance needlewheels. I've kept mine stock and it's worked flawlessly.

I got mine from premium aquatics. Give them a call, when I was looking everyone else seemed to be out of stock.

Also, on a side note, if you could wait a few months, I plan to sell mine as I bought it for a temporary system. I expect to be offering the octo for sale in 6 months at the most.

I have the 200 on a 150 gallon setup with 100 gallon sump and it works awesome. I run it stock. The 160 would do a heck of a job on your system.

Yes, not modified.

The sicci pumps work quite well stock, but can be modded to pull quite a bit more air by using aftermarket needlewheels (two different ones on the market that I'm aware of), or meshwheel mods.

I don't know this as fact, but from all I have heard and read, the more modded the pumps are, the more start up problems they have. (and that appears to be the main reliability issue, restarting after being shut off).

I have a 160 and I love the skimmer. THe sicce pump is junk. I had nothing but problems almost from day one with the pump not starting back up again and I run it stock. Finally after emailing them a few times, they sent me a brand new pump free. This pump has been better, however it has had a few incidents where it wouldn't start up. Much better then the old one.

For the money, it is a good skimmer. Maybe they have fixed the startup issues, not sure.

TBH I way prefer my Euroreef. I purchased the 160 when my ER was out for repair and it couldn't come close to the performance of the ER135. In all fairness to the product however I didn't use it long enough to properly "break in". As soon as my 135 was sent back to me I sold the Octopus.
