Refugiums

Are we still running inline rufugiums with macro algae?
I do

I love them just added a 90gallon fuge to my display system too get rid of two algae reactors. Common concensus is no sand in them and primary grow chaetomorph algae.

just watch it because macros consume trace elements (along with nutrients). But they are awesome for a lot of reasons!

Yup agreed. Had this issue.

I know some very successful tanks have tried to mitigate the impact with little tubs of miracle mud in their sump since it claims to replace traces. They appear to have had success so maybe try that?

I could. Currently using Red Sea Trace Colors and everything is growing again. I've had good luck with it so far. What runs through my mind is how long it would take for those trace elements to deplete with the mud.

There are videos talking about how you can control both the refugium light intensity and its photoperiod, allowing for fine-tuned nutrient export, including phosphate levels. I haven’t personally had experience of that level of control.

In my old basement sump, I had two refugium's—a drilled 20-gallon and a drilled 10-gallon (just for chaeto). Both cracked this week while removing hard plumbing in the sump closet. On one, a 20+ year-old 20G bulkhead shattered, making me wonder how well plastic bulkheads hold up long-term. Is bulkhead maintenance even a thing? Maybe it’s a “don’t touch, don’t worry” situation—or should it be “trust but verify”?

For my new under-tank Trigger Systems sump, I’m using the inline refugium with some rock rubble, chaeto, and an existing basic Home Depot grow bulb. If I actually have success in this wild idea of keeping coral alive again, an upgrade to a Kessil refugium light might be in the future.

I have a refugium section in my sump and I have a remote display refugium plumbed into system as well both running macro algaes

So I haven’t run a refugium in quite some time. I run my tank lean on fish and heavy on coral. Trying to keep a balance that I’m at a slight deficit of po4 and no3 instead of fighting to lower it.

I run a refug on my system with grape algae in it that the tangs love to eat on top of being a nutrient exporter. It is also a happy safe place for my pods to grow that feed my dragonet along with other creatures.

I might hit you up for some in the future if you don’t mind. I’d pay you of course. I don’t expect anything for free. I’ve never tried this type of algae.

My main thing is nutrient export and a place for pods. A food source for tangs would be great. I had a Sohol that ate bubble algae from my hand.

Pods grow like crazy in the fuge, I have used cheats in the past but the grape serves two purposes. It does a good job reducing nutrients, I really didn’t notice a difference between grape and cheat micro algae.

I pull some out all the time so you’re welcome to some.
