return pump for refugium

I am looking to set up a 20 galon long refugium for my 40 breeder. I have never done a refugium so I have a few questions. Do I Have to have all the seperate compartments or can I just put a deep sand bed and the return pump in that, or could I do one compartment for the pump so the sand does not get into the pump.. Also what kind of a pump(gph) would I use for this, does it matter how quickly the water is running through the refugium?

Not sure if this will help, but it calculates headloss so you can more accurately determine how many gph you would need
