I dunno if this belongs in the DIY folder or not. I'm just wondering where on earth i can find rock salt for sale in August. I wanted to make some rocks, but home depot isn't stocking it.

You stated you wanted to make rocks, I was wondering what type of rock you could make with rocksalt. :)

You pore the rock salt into your cement mix and then dunk them in water, and keep changing the water and once all the salt is dissolved, you have a pretty damn close to real looking live rock.(very porous) and very cheap. Once you get some coraline on there, no one will know the difference. And best of oall you can mold it yourself. Check it out on reefcentral under the diyhttp://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1156212

As stated above, go to the water softener sectionat Home Depot or Lowe's. They should have Morton Water Softener Salt (blue bag). Watch out for the other bags, as they contain other additives. You want the pure rock salt.

hmm, I made a bunch of acrocrete rocks, but never used rocksalt. I used crushed oyster shells, sand and Ziti pasta. it came out very well. I'll have to try the rocksalt idea. The kids had allot of fun sculpting stuff.

Let us know if you find it.

yes, Ziti pasta (with lines!!).

I added it in during the mixing. Once it dissolves during the curing process you are left with nice little crevices.

I would think ziti is safer for fish than rocksalt. but either one would be dissolved during the curing anyway.

Very neat idea. Now I follow you!

well you have to keep soaking the rocks until all the salt residue is gone(aka lots of water changes) before you add them to your tank.

I'm using the same technique. I picked up the water softener salt at home depot. I haven't gotten to the curing process yet, so can't comment on the finished product.
