Sand too fine... Always turning up a sand storm!

Call me IGOR :)
I need to get a few opinions. I set my tank with fine woolite sandbed. Now I regret it! If I point my Koralias even close to the bottom, they move the sand around! I'm tired of this. Would it hurt do u think to get a thicker grain sand and lay about 1" on top of my live woolite?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks guys...

idk what woolite is but im sure it wouldnt be a problem to lay another thicker size grain on top

I used Marco fine sand and had the same issue. A few weeks back I siphoned out all the old and replaced with a different brand coarser sand. So far so good. I do know of others that have put a coarser size on top of the fine with no issues. Just make sure to mix it together well.

I am having the same issue with my sand at the moment. I think putting one sand over the other is only a temp fix as the top layer would get moved around and the fine sand would start to become a problem again. I am going to siphon mine out like Mike did I just don't know what I am going to put back.

would siphoning it all out and putting new sand in cause any harm to an already established tank? as in a cycle of some sort

I have not noticed any bit of a cycle, but my conditions could be different. What works for one reefer could spell disaster for another :)

Tropic Eden Tonga Minin Flakes is great sand for those looking for new with a slightly larger grain that does not blow around (at least in my tank)

Woolite is a type of very fine sand sold by Caribe Sea I think.

Another reefer told me that if I layed a coarser sand on top of the finer it would eventually keep the fine one down. The smaller grains would get blown/swept under the coarser. Not sure if it would work. But I am willing to try.

My only concern was suffocating the already live sand underneath.

This is exactly why I am avoiding replacing it. I am afraid it would "spike" something!

Thanks for the recommendation. I will look into it.

You got that right!

I think I will try the easier way first. I will lay about an inch of a coarser sand around the tank/rock and hope for the best. Worse comes to worse, I will replace the sandbed, leaving maybe a little to re-seed it.

Hopefully things won't go nuts!
