Seahorse is pregnant; fry FREE to fosters

My seahorse is visibly pregnant and will probably give birth in 1-2 weeks. This is the first time and I have no idea what to expect. They are H. reidi and as I understand, more difficult to raise than the fry of other species. I'm not set up for this; I specifically requested 2 females from the breeder!!! Anyone who wants to take a crack at raising the fry can come get some on birthing day.

Should I repost this in the livestock available forum?

I also have 2 H.Erectus holding fry at the moment... Also my first time around.

Good luck raising or homing yours.. If you are successful please let us know what you did, so I can try to apply that to my tank & fry as well..

Reefer140, have your fry popped yet? i read that the gestation period for H.Reidi is 14 days, but it does seem to be taking longer than that. the male is getting rounder, but very slowly.

Mine was a false alarm :)

My male deflated about 10 days or so.. He got real big for a moment there though...

Its probably a good thing anyways.. My 40 gallon is a bit small for the group of seahorses that I already have... Babies would just make it more crammed.. I am in the process of upgrading them to my new 75 gallon which I hope should provide plenty of room for them to breed and the fry to live successfully.

my male gave birth but it was a bit of a non-event. it happened overnight and by the time i peeked into the tank around 9a, there were only 6-8 babies swimming around. the horses did another egg transfer that very same day, and 14 days later he gave birth again. that time, i turned off the skimmer and filter overnight hoping to see something. unfortunately i only saw a few babies and never saw the male expelling a large number of fry at once. in the 2nd pregnancy he got a lot bigger than the first. i think he might be pregnant again!

hi just saw your post. my question is what do you do with the babies after birth. if you do something how long after birth do you sell them or what do you do thanks. i would like to start a seahorse tank
