Should I be concerned?

I just set up my tank last week, a 28g JBJ HQI Nano Cube. I haven't seen my emerald crab for 5 days now and I am worried it's dead. However, I can't find the body and the parameters are fine, i.e. no ammonia, nitirite, or nitrate. I also live in a loft with LOTS of sun and I have a ton of brown algae already. I have to move the tank to a different spot, but what in the meantime will eat all of this brown algae? I have 10 snails, 10 hermit crabs, and I hope and emerald crab. All of them are very small except for the emerald. Should I get more? I really like the emerald crabs. Thanks for the help.

How are the snails and hermit crabs doing? If they are fine then chances are the emerald crab is ok too. He might be hiding somewhere unless you moved some rock and accidentally crushed it. (cruel joke) :)

BTW 1 week is a bit short to complete nitrogen cycle IMO. Did you get the rock live or uncured?

What is your temperature?

1 week is way to short for a complete cycle. I like to wait at least four to six weeks before adding any life and let the LR and LS do it's thing.

Mythrax crabs are weird. They don't always live that long. I restock my Emeralds every six months or so.

What I should have said is that I just put inhabitants in last week. The tank is completely cycled. The snails and hermits all seem to be doing fine, although they are small and if some go missing, I probably would not see them. There is only 30 lbs of live rock being a small nano, and there is plenty of places to hide, but I would have figured I would have seen him for at least 2 seconds at least in 5 days. Then again, I haven't been home when the lights were on for the last 2 days either. Should I get more cleanup crew for the algae?

Temperature is 78-79, a little high for the moment, but I will slowly be taking it down to 75 now that I have a chiller that works...First chiller came UPS and I hooked it up and water was shooting out of the bottom...fun!

What temperature are you keeping your house at? You shouldn't need to use a chiller in the winter to keep the tank around 75 unless the room is warmer then that. Maybe you need to turn your heater in the tank down.

im not sure how necessary a chiller is for that nano. 78-79 is a great temperature to shoot for. my tank as well as im sure many other members' tanks hit the 82 mark during the day.

so when you say you setup the tank a week ago...do you mean you stocked it with animals? or is that when you added the rock.sand and water?

Rock, sand and water went in 4 weeks ago. Creatures went in last weekend. The heater isn't on...it's the new JBJ HQI 28g nano with MH in the hood. The MH heats up the tank. Feedback I have gotten from other owners is that this will go to 87 in the summer without a chiller. I am keeping my house at 65 to keep the temp where it is now. I usually keep the house at 69, but the water was going to 82. In the summer, I have central air, but I keep it at 75, so the tank is going to get too hot in the summer which is why I got the chiller. I have also read that corals do best at 75, although 78-80 will not hurt them.

The other thing is not that it gets to 82 that concerns me, it's the fluctuation. So I keep the house at 69 when home, but when I leave I put it at 65 so the tank fluctuates 4 degrees in a day if I do that. I wanted the chiller more for stability of the temp than anything else.

As for temperature it looks like you know what you're doing.

As for the emerald crab, try putting some nori (sea weed) under a piece of rock and see if he show up.

i hardly saw my emeralds (5 in a 90g) during the day or lights on, mostly saw them at night....

I put 2 emeralds in my tank a year ago and I never saw them again...I have a ton of snails and several hermits...have no idea if they are in there still or not.

they ARE pretty good algae eradicators.......

You could certainly keep 2 in that tank. More than that could be fine too - kinda depends on the tank, how much junk there is to eat, and who else is competing for it. They're five bucks each. If you like them I'd toss a few in and see how they do.
