Silica Sand

Any experience with regular (quartz or silica based) play sand. Can't find southdown and I want to plant mangroves in a large tub and don't want to pay a buck a pound for aragonite. I've searched a few links on RC but they weren't very helpful. Looking for hands on experience or first hand info
