I am starting to think about what fish I want in the 45 gal I am planning right now. The tank is 24x24x18.

Here is what I am thinking.

Helfrichi's Firefish
(Nemateleotris helfrichi)

Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus carpenteri)

A pair of clown fish
Yellowstripe Maroon Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus)
Or
Ocellaris Clownfish
(Amphiprion ocellaris)

I have a few questions. Would the maroon clowns be ok in this tank? And I was thinking about adding maybe 1 or 2 other fish any suggestions? I did want to add an ORA mandarin but am unsure 1. Because I dont knot if the wrass would compete for pods with it 2. Idk if the tank would be a good fit for it. I do plan on having a 15 gal tank set up as a refuge.

Thanks
Christopher

They suggest 30g per a Maroon so you can make that judgment. You can get an ORA mandarin that also eats frozen food and not have to rely on the pods as much. Make sure you have a tight lid as well Your first two fish are known jumpers.

I was reading an article last night in marine fish and reef about clownfish. It suggests because of the potential size up to 7 inches and how aggresive they become they should be housed in a very large aquarium of 100 gallons unless they are housed with other large fish. Shy fish like a firefish would probably really get picked on.They are known for killing or bullying their tankmates IMHO I would pick a different type of clown because of the size of your tank.

Firefish shouldn't be an issue

Carpenter's wrasse are very active fish and jumpers 40 would be pushing it for confinement on
such an active fish I wouldn't unless you want a carpet surfer

I wouldn't put maroons in that small a tank they are extremely aggressive go with the Ocellaris Clownfish

The Mandarin would be a chance, you would need to make sure it was eating prepared food like mysis and tabiko and not relying on live pods.

possum wrasse

For the most part wrasses are really not a small tank fish.

Carpenters are gorgeous fish (see my male, Jack, in my avvy). While it may not be the most advised to have them in smaller tanks, as long as you have a tight fitting lid with no gaps to jump out of, you should be fine. I have mine in a 35 (it's still rather small) and though I don't have many other fish taking up space in the water column (my ocellaris chill out underneath my filter and have since I got them when they were the only fish in the tank, and my YWG chills in the caves my tiger pistol makes), my carpenter's hasn't yet tried to jump and seems to be perfectly happy. I have eggcrate overtop and there are no gaps large enough for him to fit through.

After looking around a little more these are the fish I really like.

3x vanderbuilt chromis

1x highfin perchlet

2x ocellaris clownfish

1x ORA mandarin

1x redtail Flasher wrasse

1x Helfrichi Firefish

Looking for your opinion on the fish, how they would fair in the 45 gal tank, and any experience with any of these fish.

Has anyone owned any of these fish that could give me some info. Just looking for some personal experience.
