Sump less and feeling inadequate about it......

Am I the only person who is not using a sump for their tank? I have a 55 gallon FOWLR tank and have a hang on the tank protein skimmer and heater and power heads in the tank and no sump. Is that bad? There is a bit of stuff with teh heater and the skimmer and all crowding the tank. Is the sump more for the visual asthetics as well as being able to get better skimmers in the sump? I am thinking of revamping the tank, would I have to then drill holes in the tank I have or just in the Sump tank down below?

Look into lifereef hob overflows. You can add a sump with that without having to drill your system, and that hob overflow is very reliable.

Question: I was looking at it last night. I believe the overflow hangs on the back of the tank and then the tube goes down the back and goes into the sump from there? Were is the tube go and where connected to down below? tot eh protein skimmer? So the sump is underneath and the tube from the overflow goes down to it?

A few sump benefits:

-Place to locate some equipment (visual thing)
-Increased water volume (temp/water param stability)
-Place for detrius to settle for easier cleaning.
-Increased aeration of water from the extra "flowing" through the tubes.
-Display tank water level unaffected by water changes.
