Tank Temperature

Does anyone periodically check the temperature to ensure their Apex is accurate? I have not typically in the past, but last night noticed that the water felt cold. My Apex was reading 80.1 (I run my tank between 77-78) and thought it was odd. I checked with a digital cooking thermometer and then an old fashioned mercury and they were both reading 73! I adjusted the temp on the Apex to there. Heaters kicked on and tank seems to be ok now.

I check mine during weekly water change with another digital thermometer I use to make up the new wc water.

it isn’t lab grade on anything but it is a second source of checking temp to see if something is off and it always reads dead on to the apex.

I gauge it when I stick my hand in for water changes. Last week that's when I noticed it was cold and I looked at my controller which is out of the way and it was 2-3 degrees down so that prompted me to get a new heater lol

I leave a glass therm in my sump and check it when I empty the skimmer to make sure it matches the temp controller. I also have a separate (and way smaller) digital therm heater set a degree lower than the main heater/controller that I use to make sure all 3 match.

Yeah I check it before water change. Also I recalibrate the temp prob every quarter.

Thanks for the reminder. Just checked my Apex against meat thermometer and it was spot on!

Never trust your hand to be a good temperature probe. Trust your second or third temp probe.
I never had to or think to even check my GHL temp probe with another probe after the initial set up. If I don’t see anything out of the ordinary, there’s no need. If the temps are bouncing all over the place or the heaters are not on and you’re expecting them to be on, then probably something is off.

Since temp doesn't need to be super perfectly controlled, I also keep a glass thermometer (covered with a bit of translucent plastic tubing) in various places to double check.
