Sigh of releif....

9 hours with no power, but everthing in the tank looks just fine. Gotta love those $12 battery back up pumps :)

BTW, what the heck is a "microburst" anyway?

glad it all went well for the tank John....

i dont think we lost power.... we might have...

I drove through that right as it was going on yesterday. Was a bit scary. Tree limbs falling down everywhere tons of wind. Saw one house with about 3 large trees down in the yard right next to the house.

I rode home 14 miles on my bike in it!!

Ok, whats a B11 $12, back up pump? all ive ever seen is the $100 ones that switch from plug to battery when the power goes out. How many people have these set up in their tanks? I rarely loose power in my area, do you keep these pumps running all the time and they just switch to battery power when the power goes out? Ive seen these things in catalogs but for some reason assumed they were only for fresh water tanks.

Penplax B11 battery back up. (there are knock offs out now that are the same but have different mfg names on them).

The pumps take two D batteries, and they have a normal 120v plug. You plug the plug in and as long as there is power the pump stays OFF. When the power goes off the batteries kick in and the pump turns on. Keep them hooked up all the time, then when your at work and the power goes out your covered. Best $12 you can spend. (OK, $36 for the three I have on my system)

Agreed, I've kept one in my closet for 3 years now and have used it four times easily justifying the $12.

Kind of defeats the purpose no? Should be hooked up all the time so it turns on when your not home.

I always have 2 of these on my tank as well just in case one dies.

where do you guys hide the airstones? I think an airline and airstone hanging down in the display tank at all times would be ugly, no? I thought maybe you could hide them in the overflow.. but with power off there won't be any water in the overflow.. lol

I use black air line and run it down into the tank inside a section of 1/2" grey PVC that's standing at the edge of an overflow box. The bottom of the PVC is behind a rock, and the air lines/stones are snaked under a couple of other rocks.

It doesn't look great, but it's also not very distracting. The piece of mind is more than worth it.
