Too much Salt added....

I was about to do a water change on my 75g, I added to much salt to 20g of RO/DI , It's at 1.040 which is high i know, but I don't have anything but rock in my tank, can I do the change and add RO/DI later. I just don't have any ro/di at this time to dilute it? Will the high salinity affect the rock?

I wouldn't do it. You're basically doing a 25% water change, and if your tank is at 1.023 sg now, then it would jump to 1.027. That's a pretty big change.

It's possible it could kill little critters in your tank and start a cycle.

There's no hurry to do the change, so why not let it sit, and do the change when you've got RODI water.

O.k .... It's been 5 days since I did a change but I only did a 15% change, during the cycle does it have to be 25% or does it depend on how long I want my tank to cycle?

You don't need to change any water during the cycle. It will lengthen the cycle if you do a water change.

The only reason to do water changes during a cycle is if you have livestock in the tank (which you shouldn't have anyways).

I wouldn't worry about water changes during your cycle, as long as you are using live rock and not LIVESTOCK to cycle. The ammonia that is building up will be processed by the nitrifying bacteria. Some people say that water changes during the cycle can actually slow it down because you are removing the food that the bacteral colonies are using to grow.

WHAT???? I thought you had to do water changes to get the high levels of bad stuff out? Now I'm confused...

Well, I feel better about not having to do water changes at this time.... I'm glad I asked the question..

Thanks everyone :)
